Summer ’25
The dirt kicks up behind me as I drive down the lane
With nothing to expect, I’m surprisingly calm.
Cows are scattered throughout the pastures,
Grazing their days away.
I am greeted by several teen girls, who’d be my co-counselors.
Although several years separate us, we joyfully bond
Learning every minute detail about each other.
As the air lingers with the scent of manure and dirt,
I am naïve at what is to come.
With no experience of farming, or camp counseling,
I quickly pick it up and impress even myself.
Days are filled with hard work and laughter,
Soon to be filled with breakdowns and tears.
The sessions begin and chaos ensues
But in the midst of the crazy of it all there is good.
I meet lots of young girls, with lives tougher than I,
Still holding onto hope and whimsey, despite it all.
I hope they never lose their joy.
I create relationships that most certainly changed my life
And which I couldn’t imagine life without.
Although one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,
I have no regrets,
And never will.
